Timing chain replacement
Have '09 HHR SS Turbo that I would like to do preventative timing chain and needed components replacement. I normally do my most all my own work but i have "normal old school" autos and done lots of work but really know of no competent mechanics around. that's sad, everyone is always asking me to work on their cars but i hate the new cars LOL. I live in NE Ohio Youngstown/Warren area does anyone know of a "knowledgeable" person to do this for me, I will even supply the correct parts. Don't even want to do myself (wife car) she loves it??? Thks for any help.

As the Ecotec 2.0 Turbo has a different balance shaft sprocket, and VVT , the Cloyes 9-4201SX kit is best
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ce49ada05.jpeg With this kit you reuse the VVT camshaft phasers and the crankshaft sprocket https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...402f2bdc0.jpeg 9-4202SX is the balance shaft kit , it doesn’t include sprockets , they don’t match the crankshaft sprocket,?so you can’t use it anyways. |
Changing the chains is not a hard job to preform

thank you for the help! I'll get the kit and stare at it maybe I'll get brave. This car just keeps giving. Again, thanks for the knowledge better to learn than do it twice.

i marked the water pump / aluminum cross tube so i could make sure to get it clocked right |
The Cloyes 9-4201SX kit says it does not contain Camshaft Sprocket, Crankshaft Sprocket, or Idler Sprockets. Since these typically don't go bad, do they need to be replaced as part of normal maintenance? My 2008 HHR SS just turned over 100,000 miles (100,3xx IIRC now) and figure with all the concern over the OEM stuff getting to the end of its lifecycle, thinking it should be replaced.
Car runs great now, no issues but I figure it's better to be safe than sorry and stranded. |
Those sprockets and cam phasers don’t usually wear as much as the timing chain stretches.
the front guide does break and the front guide upper bolt works loose , so replace the guides and that upper bolt. |
Personally i am a newbie to HHR’s so definitely not an authority myself. My car is a 2.2 vvt engine and i wanted to put new cam phasers/sprocket assemblies in mine (11000 miles). I also put the new balancer sprockets in mine since they were in the kit.
Put new water pump in it while your at it...also i marked the tube on mine for orientation to re-install. Makes life easier. Lol |
