umm... every manual car/bike/etc I have owned has been able to "creep" forward without giving it gas; You just have to know where the "friction point" is and slowly release it through that portion.

That applies to any car!

Jeez, you young folks and manual transmissions!?!
100000000000000000000000000000000000000+++++

you can move ANY car letting out the clutch really slow without giving it gas. that's how i teach people to drive a stick,since first gear is the hardest to come out of for beginners.

your cobalt clutch wasn't adjusted or you are not that experienced at doing it. not attacking you,but it can be done with ease.

Everything I have ever drove has required a little bit of gas to move, including this car up untill I noticed it yesterday.
I have driven two SS's (mine and one I test drove) that both crept forward if you let the clutch out slowly enough. In fact, this was how I figured out how to get going without stalling (this is my first MT car). Also, I don't think it has anything to do with air temperature, as I have been able to do it even when it's 110* out here (i.e., last week )

Now that I notice I can take off without giving it gas it kind of makes driving in traffic a little bit more enjoyable (just let the clutch out slowly never touch the gas and it just rolls along on its own). I guess people just don't give these cars the credit they deserve for the power and torque they develop.

As stated above, I think it has more to do with the gearing of the transmission than anything else. First gear ratio is 3.38 and the final drive ratio is 4.05. It has less to do with the low end torque of the engine, and more to do with the gearing in the transaxle allowing the small engine to get the weight of the vehicle to move more easily at low speeds. This gearing actually helps compensate for a small displacement engine, to help you get "out of the hole" more quickly and get the engine reved up into its power band where the turbo is spooled. I too find my SS VERY hard to stall and can creep along without giving the car any gas in first. I had an 88 Thunderbird with a 2.3L turbo 4 that was the same way. It had a low 3.97 first gear that made the car hard to stall but the real purpose was to get the motor to rev into the power band quickly.

Just my 2 cents.

Don't forget modern electronics...the motor will try to maintain constant idle and if that means a bit more gas as your loading it up then fine...does the sameting with AC, it compensates for the load to maintain the preset idle....

I do the 1st gear creep occasionally if I'm in a hurry and don't want to give the motor my usual 1-2 minute warmup before loading it.

I just wish they'd get rid of those stupid clutch starter lockout switches. Back in the day, a decent starter motor could get a disabled car back into the driveway if it wouldn't start.
