I have done the mod and it can NOT be done from the top like u can on a GXP. The turbo and WG are buried close to firewall and u have to reach up
and loosed the 2 10mm nuts holding wg rod and then back off the nut
toward the open end and then tighten up the other nut.

If you read the Solstice forum about this mod, you really need to have
a DashHawk or HPT so u can monitor a/f and monitor knock. This mod can be
done in stages as you can back up the nut alot, a little, or medium amount.
I did a few turns and got and increase in 1st gear from 10-12 psi and in higher gears from 15 to 17-19 psi BUT the pcm WILL learn some of this out
as it monitors airflow/torque. After pcm relearning, I still have a gain and the
car feels great. I do not see any knock but I run 93 octane. If you do this mod and do not monitor, you are taking a chance.

Westers will have a hot tune for 2008 HHR SS soon and the modified
pcm will control the boost at higher levels without doing the WG trick and
in fact, it is suggested that the wg rod be run in the stock position with
the hot tune.

I spoke to Westerns and he said he has to finish it up but when will it be? And what's up with H/P Tuners? They are leaving us stranded? So Turbofreak you think we should just leave it alone for now????? And what more can you tell us about the Westerns Tuning? Yeah/Nah? Good bad indifferent?

I did the mod cause it is easy if u have a hoist or can put car high on stands
but I expect I will reverse it when the Westers tune is done which he expects
in a couple weeks or so. HPT, I expect , is midsummer.

Westers is a smart guy and has done GM pcms for years and years. If you
have been on internet for years and visited pcm forums, like DIY GMECM, u
will recognize him from his handle: Programmer.

Nice to see a voice of reason. Looked like people were going to just turn up the boost and not worry about little things like A/F and running lean. I guess they haven't seen a golf ball size hole in a block from turning up the boost and going lean.

^^--- With this car your not really going to go lean.. the PCM will adjust to minor settings. even reducing items to get the engine back to a stock form of power. but i agree dont mess with one thing and not adjust properly for others.

I'm not so sure how this turbo system operates, but on my old Saab, they recommend that this adjustment be made only to adjust base boost, and that boost should be measured before adjusting. Too much boost & kapow goes the engine. I don't think they would cover this on warranty.

The pcm can adjust fuel trim at idle, and at any place LESS than full throttle, but since the HHRSS does NOT have a wideband O2 sensor, you are going on a programmed fuel delivery curve under full throttle, which would definately be leaner if you turn up the boost with no other changes. The mass air sensor picks up some of the additional air flow, but isn't going to compensate completely. And the engine load calcs will eventually reduce boost to keep torque numbers within the range programmed. Beware of the "easy" fixes.
