I upgraded my OEM mirror w/ lamp to a Gentex GENK3 mirror. Installation was pretty simple. You can use the same wiring harness already connected to your OEM lamp. All I needed to do was add a new wire to add accessory power for the auto-dimming function. Here are the steps and pics I took during installation.

The first pictue is of the original wiring harness. The second pic shows the new wire I added for accessory power. I used the red/black power included with the GENK3 mirror. I purchased an "add-a-circuit" mini fuseholder and installed it on port 21 (center console) with a 10amp fuse.

I opened the A-pillar on the front passenger side and ran the wire down and across the glove compartment to the fuse box. Crimped the wires together and installation is complete!

The mirror can be purchased easily at ebay between $80 to $100. Hope you find this helpful!

What other features, like compass, does this mirror have? Can you put a pic of the final install when you get a chance?

Thanx

ng,

mirror looks exactly just like the first pic I posted on this thread. I know gentex offers other options (temp, compass, homelink, etc) but I dont know how wiring is on the other mirrors. The mirror I have only has lamps and auto-dimming option.

Spare fuse #21 + Mini Add a Fuse...Easiest way to add on a remote wire for the HHR! That's what I used for my Sat Radio. :twothumbs:

I bet it was HHRNut...because I think that's the same thing that was used when putting in the backlighting for the window controls...but thanks for thinking of me.

Uh Oh...now I've gone and done it. Hope you don't have a wife that will want to kill me for bringing up the backlighting.

the wife is cool with the mods. As long as I divide my time between family and hobby accordingly she has no complaints.

But just in case she says something about the back lights mod I'll make sure to blame it on you deb...lol.

i installed a CIPA auto dimming rear view with compass. I followed the same wiring and all seems to work fine. All it needed was a ignition controlled 12 volt and a ground. The factory wires allow for the lights to come on withthe dome lights like the factory one. The compass and auto dim comes on with the key. This pretty much takes me to the same option level i wanted but could not find when i bought the car.

Thanks HHR PNOY for the add-a-circuit and pics. also the spot on the fues box. I need a accy hookup for my Homelink auto dimming mirror.

I want to install an autodimming mirror with a thermometer to replace the slow acting factory unit. I liked the thermometer in my 95 Blazer.

I don't see any pictures in the first post but the descriptions should be good enough.

mirror compass not working

Awhile back, installed a Genx mirror with lights/auto-dim and compass. The dealer said that there was a electrical "leak" that was causing the battery to go dead after a few days of not running. They disconnected the mirror and it hasn't operated since. I got a add-a-fuse and went looking for a switched fuse. I tried the radio and got nothing:clueless:. I traced the wiring and discovered that all was right, except the compass wasn't working. I don't know if the auto-dim is working or not. I hooked it up the original way that I had it. Lights but no compass. Any suggestions?
