Thanks for the write-up. I may have to do this myself. I took one wheel off and moved the whole assembly back and forth by hand. My clunk/loose area seems to be just under the steering rack boot. Doesnt do it with the front end off the ground, but normally I fill feel a loose clunk if I turn the wheel back and forth. Curious if there is anything I can inspect or not?

Look at the input shaft to the rack from the steering column shaft, does it move up and down when someone turns the steering wheel, this indicates the rack worm gear is worn out.

is that the vertical shaft with the ~15mm bolt on it? I didn't see anything move like that.

not sure if this says anything but here's the thing under the boot

That is the rack part, looks tried and worn.

Where this part slides onto the input shaft, that is a 13 mm head bolt.

I inspected the intermediate steering shaft. Seemed fine. Noise appears to be coming from the engine bay side of the grommet.

is it possible to remove and disassemble the entire rack and pinion assembly to see what is warn? And then replace only parts needed, or do I need to replace the entire thing?

will post a video in a few minutes.
