Tightening Torque Values for Common Maintenance Items

Here is a list of commonly referenced torque values for general maintenance items.
It is by no means a comprehensive list, and should be accurate for the various HHR models,
but do double check to ensure their accuracy if something does not look quite right.

Please point out any error or suggest additions, and I will update the post here as necessary.

I keep a similar list tacked to the wall near my tool chest.


OIL CHANGE
oil cap and drain plug - 25 Nm or 18 ft/lb.

WHEEL LUG NUTS - 100 ft lbs

SPARK PLUGS - 15 lb ft or 20 N.m

FRONT BRAKES:
Caliper guide pin bolts - 25 lb ft or 34 N•m
Brake hose-to-brake caliper bolt to the brake caliper- 33 lb ft or 44 N•m
Application Specification--------------------------------------Metric-- English
Brake Caliper Bleeder Valve - Front (J41, JL9, JM4)-----11 N•m-- 97 lb in
Brake Caliper Bleeder Valve - Rear (JL9)------------------11 N•m-- 97 lb in
Brake Caliper Bracket Bolt - Front (J41, JM4)-------------115 N•m-- 85 lb ft
Brake Caliper Bracket Bolt - Front (JL9)-------------------130 N•m-- 96 lb ft
Brake Caliper Bracket Bolt - Rear (JL9)--------------------115 N•m-- 85 lb ft
Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt - Front (J41, JL9, JM4)-----35 N•m-- 26 lb ft
Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt - Rear (JL9)------------------35 N•m-- 26 lb ft
Brake Hose Fitting Bolt - Front and Rear------------------40 N•m-- 30 lb ft

- J41 Brakes, front disc/rear drum,
- JL9 Brakes, 4-wheel antilock, 4-wheel disc (ie: SS model)
- JM4 Brakes, 4-wheel antilock, front disc/rear drum
( Look on your RPO list in the glove box to determine which spec to use if not sure)

HUBS - Front:
Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly Mounting Bolts - 85 lb ft
Wheel Drive Shaft Nut - 155 lb ft

STEERING RACK:
- steering rack mounting bolts - 81 ft/lbs
- intermediate shaft outer yoke pinch bolt - 25 ft/lbs

SUSPENSION - FRONT:
rear shock bolts - TOP: 66 lb ft, BOTTOM: 92 lb ft
Strut bearing plate nuts 15 lb ft
Front Swaybar bushing brackets : 37 lb ft
Sway bar endlink bolts: 59 lb ft
Front knuckle bolt: 89 lb ft
Lower Control Arm rear bolt: tighten to 100 N•m (74 lb ft), then tighten an additional 180 degrees.
Lower control arm to frame bolts - 55 N•m (41 lb ft).
Lower control arm balljoint pinch nut/bolt - first pass: 37 ft/lb, then loosen it 3/4 of a turn - second pass: 37 ft/lb, - then tighten it an addition 30 deg

SUSPENSION - REAR (SS model)

Bracket to Body Bolts ----------90 N.m + 45° ----66 lb ft + 45°
Brake Hose Fittings ------------19 N.m ----------14 lb ft
Bushing Through Bolts ---------90 N.m + 60° -----66 lb ft + 60°
Shock Bolt Lower -------------125 N.m ----------92 lb ft
Shock Bolt Upper --------------90 N.m -----------66 lb ft
Wheel Bearing/
Hub Assembly Mounting Nuts ---45 N.m + 30° -----33 lb ft + 30°

VALVE COVER:
Cam Cover to Cylinder Head - 10 N.m or 89 lb in
Cam Cover to Ground Cable Bolt - 10 N.m or 89 lb in
Cam Cover to Ground Cable Stud - 10 N.m or 89 lb in

CAMSHAFT:
- Camshaft Cap Bolt - 10 N.m or 89 lb in
- Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt - 10 N.m or 89 lb in
- Camshaft Position Sensor Bolt - 10 N.m or 89 lb in
- Camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner - 75 N.m or 55 lb ft
- Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator – 89 inch pounds
- Intake Camshaft Position Actuator - 89 inch pounds


THERMOSTAT HOUSING:
Thermostat Housing to Block Bolts - 10 N.m or 89 lb in

TRANSMISSION - 5 SPEED MANUAL:
Drain Plugs 38 Nm - 28 lb ft
Front Transmission Mount Bolts 50 Nm - 37 lb ft
Front Transmission Mount Through Bolt 100 Nm - 74 lb ft
Heat Shield to Engine Block Bolt 30 Nm - 22 lb ft

TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC:

Transmission pan 10 N.m. 89 lb. INCH

Actually I needed to update my shop copy with a few specs, so thought what the heck, I should throw it online in case it might just help out oldblue.

5-Speed Manual, Fastener Tightening Specifications:
