looking for SS

Hi,
My name is Glenn and I have been actively checking out HHR SS's in search of a nice low mileage example. I have been little gun shy about purchasing one though until I finished researching. My deepest concerns though are the obvious Porous block. Would anyone be able to confirm if there are specific date codes I should be looking for at which point the casting flaws were rectified.

Thank you in advance!

Moved to introductions.

It was only 2008 that had the problem, at this point if it hasn't raised it's ugly head, you shouldn't need to worry. It was not that big a deal to begin with, just a TSB.

Welcome to the site, there are several gently driven SS's in our Classified Ads, check them out!

There were 2 "porosity" things. One was the bolt hole for the AC compressor was too deep, solution is teflon tape on bolt. The other was "bubbles" in the casting; after machining the they turn into holes so that the head gasket does not seal properly, solution was adding gasket shellac to the normally unsealed head gasket.

Unrelated to "porosity" was some oil leakage around the high pressure fuel pump and the front crankshaft seal.

Thank you Gentlemen,

I appreciate your input. I have driven several and appreciate the power and versatility of these vehicles. I was just wanting to make sure they were pretty dependable as I had read some horror stories. The cost of an engine swap sounds like it can be significant.

Hello,
Well I did mange to get an early build 2008 SS in Victory red. I am very pleased with the purchase for the most part. As we know, buying a used vehicle is a bit of a crap shoot at times, but this one appears to have been treated pretty well. I will replace the four disc brakes rotors with the slotted variety as the originals are pulsating. They look good visually, but after usage start acting up a bit.
It is a manual and has the limited slip option. All in all a pretty fun ride!

Glenn

Congratulations! Have a look at the rear LCA bushings, that could be your brake shake!

nice!
where did you pick it up from?

Sorry for the late reply, very busy right now. I picked the vehicle up in Chatham Ontario. It had sat for a long time. I made an offer and surprise it was accepted. It is a very fun and useful vehicle and gets a lot of attention. I am very happy with this purchase!
