It is a concept that automotive designers have copied for decades n imitating styling cues of competitive brands.

The 2006 Chevrolet HHR (High Heritage Roofline) is no exception with characteristics that mimic the popular Chrysler PT Cruiser.

But unlike the PT that suggests "retro" styling, Chevy HHR actually draws a design lineage traced back to the 1949 Chevy Suburban with a modern interpretation of its bullet-nose hood, horizontal grille, outboard fenders and perpendicular rear fascia.

The all-new HHR is built on the easy-to-maneuver Chevy Cobalt compact car architecture yet is 7.4 inches longer, 2 inches wider and more than 2 inches taller than its Chrysler rival.

HHR's larger outside dimension yields more cabin space for five tall adult passengers or cargo. Its reconfigurable interior integrates clever storage solutions for just about any lifestyle interest.

A second-row, 60/40 seat folds flat and when combined with the fold-down front passenger seatback contains eight-foot of cargo from the instrument panel to its liftgate.

Load surfaces and cargo bay walls are shielded with a durable plastic composite to resist dings and scratches. A two-tier rear shelf offers storage versatility for groceries or small parcels.

Functional running boards add to HHR's nostalgia and also ease entry or exit to and from the cabin.

Instrumentation and gauge cluster is clearly defined and easy to read. Dials are large and simple to operate. Storage compartments are plentiful.

"Chevy's HHR is a hit with the 20-40 year old crowd," said Jim Portalatin, new car salesperson for Smith Chevrolet in Hammond. "HHR offers great customizing possibilities for the younger buyer looking to personalize their vehicle and plenty of cargo versatility for families and people on the go."

The front-wheel drive 2006 Chevrolet HHR comes in LS, and upscale LT trim levels powered by either a 2.2-liter with 143 horsepower or 2.4-liter engine that delivers 172 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard with a four-speed automatic available as an option.
