How long before the DMV recognizes a VIN?

I was just told by my dealer that my new 08 HHR is on it's way to Janesville from Mexico on the train. I'm VERY happy right now!

However, they gave me the new VIN, but it doesn't appear in any DMV database as yet. Would anybody have any idea how long it takes to show up? I want to ensure my Insurance Agent has my records updated before I take delivery.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I am VERY excited to see pics of your new Summit White HHR! My favorite color!

The VIN will not showup in a DMV database until the vehicle is actually titled until then the only documentation is the Certificate of Orign or CO as it is called That is how the dealer can get a title to you (or your lien holder)

That's what I was thinking too. Because the manufactor makes the VIN based on DMV guidelines. And no records would be processed until dealer gets it and sells it.

Did he actually have the FULL VIN ? including the last 5(6) digits (the actual serial number)? If he gave the full VIN to you, then you can use that number to have your Ins Agent get everything ready for you. Here in PA, the dealer needs to contact the agent to finalize it though.

We just call them "certs". I have about 5000 in a drawer near me. We keep them until the vehicle goes to auction.

I have Nationwide Ins and every time I buy a new car my agent tell me that I will be covered and don't worry since there is a day or two in which to get the vin to them, just make sure your agent has been notified when you are taking delivery and what make and model of car you are getting.
