Glad you brought up George Lopez - wasn't even thinking about him while I wrote my earlier post(s). Lopez' stand-up is pretty much a recounting of my childhood memories, all while surrounded by my family. Funny stuff, man, no other way around it.

My wife, who is not a minority, sat down to watch Lopez' "Why You Cryin'" with me one evening, and I pretty much said: "Listen to what he's saying, and you'll understand my family that much more." Everything Lopez says in that bit encapsulates several events from my past.

I hope they all keep it coming.

I watch Lopez's show every week. I grew up loving comedians like Red Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and so forth so I have never had a problem with ethnic humor. I understand that it's just comedy!

 

Yup. I'm sure you could go through lots of comedians routines throughout the years and find similar jokes. It's just a coincidence and it's not verbatim. I mean how many songs have the same title. Would you accuse them of stealing? The Jesus thing was funny and there was a lot more to it than just that little bit.

 

Songs with the same titles cannot be considered as stealing if the lyrics are different.

i cant think of another comedian that "borrows" from other comics and profits off those jokes.

I love when I have my cell set on one of my Mencia tones and he makes fun of me. I have one where he calls you a f'ing loser for downloading his ringtone. Or the one where he tells me when I set my phone to vibrate put it in my front pocket not my back pocket so I don't look like a.......... As you can tell I'm easily amused. I have 15 Mencia ringtones on my phone as of right now.

 

So it was ok to laugh? Because I thought it was a riot. I don't catch his show often but I did see another where he played a middle eastern quick shop owner and I died laughing at it also. I think I'll need find out the regular timeslot.

Need a good laugh? Comedy Central is on channel 56 on our cable provider and Fox News is on 55. Talk about two far extremes. There's a contrast for you!

matter of fact when i was with my family when we heard abot it, i was like uhh quien lo va acer? todos los mojados? "who is gonna make it? all the wetbacks?" i mean i should be credited with making up the joke then....

i even remember hearing a friend of mine saying the FEMA thing b4 Gee-Lo said it on his hbo thing... he said fema = find every mojado around ... gee-lo said fema = find every mexican available... again think we deserve credit...

i mean damn there are similarities in all the jokes, but i guess who ever says it better is credited with the joke? so i would guess its not "borrowing"

i think i read joe rogan is gonna release a comedy cd...WHEN IN THE HELL did he ever become a comic? he totally FU**ED up the MAN SHOW along with that other dumbass, so now he is a comic? why not pick fights with mencia to get some light on himself? stupid man

PhxHHr, you are right, all the stuff lopez says ive heard all my life too...i think all of us who ever heard our parents say "do it again, that way you learn...que te quite lo baboso, do it again" maybe we should get like 10 cents for everytjime he says it...

 

explain how a comic making fun of his/her background and a comic telling a joke about jesus (sam k. joke) or raising a son to be a good football player (bill cosby joke) the same thing? Everyone has life experiences and call tell their stories their way, even though millions of people has lived the same life experience. But to repeat someone's material that was made up (not a life story) and change the words around to make it their own is just plain stealing.

I see your point about comics such as chris rock and lopez making digs about the way their grew up, and telling the stories in a funny way. Everyone has a funny story about how they grew up.

Maybe if you made the career choice to become a comedian and told this joke before the other comics did you might be getting paid by now.

I just dont find mencia funny. To tell jokes is one thing, hell to steal jokes is another thing but to make a career out of making fun of the metally handicapped? Maybe he's just re-telling the audience his life story...dee deee deeee!
