The LAPD has a new crime fighting "smart car". Pretty interesting.

If I'm not mistaken I remember seeing videos about this license plate scanning technology being used up here in Canada. I think Toronto police were using it about a year ago.
The City of Calgary parking authority is starting to use technology like this as well to give parking tickets. They have started to eliminate parking meters and replace them with a computer pay system which links with a central system and then back to these camera vehicles which can drive around and record vehicles parked over time in a database to send out tickets later. It's a pretty sophisticated system.
