I have an 09 SS,109k. Noticed engine temperature kept going up on my way home yesterday setting off the warning light. Checked coolant level, appeared to be alittle low in overflow tank. Added small amount up to cool level as best as I could see. Ran somewhat cool on my way to gym, 220 but it was early in morning and only drive about 8 miles. Temp rose to 234 on my way home heat of the day. Checked the coolant fan when I got home and its not running. Thought I would check the fuse looked it up in the manual and then fuse cover. Still not sure really. Manual said #40 I believe and fuse cover said #7. Looking at the fuse I definitely don't have one that size to replace. I didn't pull either one yet to check. thought I would research first. Is the fuse usually the main culprit or something else?
If you checked the coolant recovery tank level you still know nothing about how much coolant is circulating in the system. The slightest leak in the hose to the tank, or pressure cap, or its fitting, and you could be drawing in air as the car cools instead of coolant. With the car cold, you need to remove the pressure cap. There should be nothing but coolant in there, not air.
Definitely read the manual about the cooling system and what to do when you get warning lights. When the car gets that hot it needs to be shut down. The engine you save could be yours.
Yes, with no fan you will quickly overheat if the car is sitting in traffic. If the car does not quickly cool back down once you're moving 35mph or so, it's not just the fan.
Check coolant level under the pressure cap!
SS has a PWM controller for the fan that does wear out. It is located on the fan shroud with wires on both sides. Not very expensive, here is one on ebay; They also come with a new fan/shroud assembly. https://www.ebay.com/itm/30412617690...Bk9SR7jtiJu0Yg
Also, check the wiring that plugs into the fan module. I recall a couple of SS owners on this site found some burnt wiring or connectors in the harness. My memory says it was somewhere close to that module.
