First post and question
 

First of all, I've been a lurker here for many years. I own a Grey 2008 LS HHR, and have loved it since.

I recently replace the thermostat a few months ago, and the old gal was working fine for a while, until a few days ago when the gauge stays flatlined, and it comes on after a long while. No check engine light, so I am at a loss.

Anyone been through this issue?

Could be the temp sender, could be low on coolant.

Will check the coolant later today.

As far as the temp sender, I thought replacing the thermostat would have fixed the problem.

I'm not a Mechanic by any means, so I am not as versed as everyone here.

Well, that will have to take a back seat for my new problem.

Rock or something but the back windshield, shattered into a million pieces. That's priority #1 now. Yay.

Oh man - that sucks.

When you get back to the temperature issue, try monitoring it from when you first start it up. And keep an eye out for the Check Engine Light. If it is the thermostat (and it could still be that) watch as the temperature rises to see if it hits 180+F. If it blanks out prior to the 180 mark on a regular basis, I'd suspect the thermostat still.

You can also check the temperature sending unit - make sure it has a good clean contact - another member recently noticed his digital temp display jumping up and down a few degrees and traced it down to a bad contact at the sending unit.

If you have a low deductible ($100) comprehensive insurance policy You can usually find a glass shop to waive the deductible. You DO NOT have to go to SafeLite!

For that coolant issue, what thermostat did you use?
There have been many that used Stant or MotoRad products and those failed within a short period of time.
The AC Delco thermostat opens within the computers expected time frame.

You really should elevate the front of your car by at least jacking up the passengers side at the jacking point, run your engine till it is warm and the thermostat opens then top the coolant level.

I have a set of ramps that work nicely for this.
