Got a P0442 code, and I think it's the hole you put the gas nozzle into

I'm sorry, I don't know the actual name of what I'm referring to, but it's just the part you put the gas cap onto. My gas cap itself is fine and I'm not really experiencing any bigger symptoms like the flex pipe noise... But I do notice that metal is really rusty, and I feel like it's not letting the gas cap set efficiently. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back (yet), but that piece has always been rusty.

I'm wondering if anyone knows any DYI fixes to get rust off of that, because I'd really prefer not to take it in if I can help it.

Scraping and WD40.

This explains how it works and why it appears to be fixed. It is only a problem if you need an emissions test.

The filler neck, is fairly easy to replace if you have holes rusted thru, of course select your appropriate year.

I can add from experience that we had a 2000 Malibu that had an evap system code. There was rust around the fuel cap area as you describe, likely with a few pinholes in the evap chamber, not allowing it to hold pressure. Replacing the fuel filler neck took about a half hour. Upon test driving the car, the CEL went out before I was at the end of our street.

It says in your profile that you have an '06. Since you live in New York state you are in the rust belt so, it could be your gas lines are rusted.

They tend to rust under the car just in front of the driver side rear wheel. I had that problem.

First I replaced the gas cap which helped for a few weeks but the code kept coming back. Then gas started to drip on the ground. I used fuel injected rated rubber hose since I could not find a pre bent steel replacement line. You can search this site for my postings on the topic if ya want.

Its held up for years now.

I stuck a rag in the hole, grabbed my DeWalt and used a wire brush on it. As long as it hasn't rusted all the way through, then you should be fine. Here is the wire brush I used on my drill... just clean the outter surface of where the gasket seats, you don't want to go any deeper and get that crud in your tank. Good luck. :)
