Looking for an engine

Hi,
I have a 2010 HHR LT that I need an engine for. My mechanic told me there is a misfire internally within the engine. And it would be better to replace the engine, he quoted me $5k for a new engine. I'm trying to shop around and see what I can find and where. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

This is Ol' Blue.

What does " a misfire internally within the engine" mean? That sounds like BS to me. There must be a better description, because that means nothing and is not possible. If that is really what the mechanic said, I would find another mechanic before spending a dime.
You ought to be able to get a used engine installed for closer to $3000, if he means a brand new, never used engine that is probably a good price.
There are thousands of 2.4L ecotec engines in junk yards for $300-$500,

I'm not exactly sure what the mechanic means. He told me that he did a more indepth diagnosis and it found a misfire within the engine. I had just replaced an ignition coil on the 3rd cylinder but he was getting another code. So he did this other test. When I drive her, she stutters like she's going to die out, but she doesn't. I don't want to replace the engine if I don't have to. I don't really have the money for it. If I can get her to another mechanic, I'll get that second opinion

Demand specifics. Exactly what is the problem what are the code NUMBERS, not some BS description. There is no such thing as an internal misfire.
My bet is it needs a new timing set, If the code is P0016 or P0017.
Find out what tests were done, Ask questions, get things in writing.

This is what the paperwork said

So the misfire is from a bad valve, rings, head gasket? If he did it correctly he can tell you what it needs rather than replace the engine. To many mechanics swap a couple parts and it that don't fix it replace the engine. After replacement it still misses and they send it to a shop that knows what they are doing to find the wiring problem. Get another opinion. You don't need an engine unless it's a ring or cracked block which is unlikely. The worse you may be looking at is a head problem.

This was Oldblue. I’m thinking timing chain possibly a broken front guide. Maybe the balance shaft chain. Not hard or expensive to change

The way to test the coil is to swap 2 of them if the code changes the coil is bad. Not just replacing expensive non-returnable parts and seeing if that helps.
They did not do a wet compression test to test the rings. The test shown does not indicate bad valves.
A "tune up" consists of changing the spark plugs (ACDelco 42-103 ONLY} every 100,000 miles. The price they charged is not outrageous, if they used the correct plugs and charge an hourly rate of $100. Find out what brand plugs they installed.
Hard shifting comes from the CheckEngineLight being on.
They only cite a "stored" code, not any "current" codes.
That paper has no mention of "internal misfire".
I have never heard of any one needing a complete teardown to diagnose a misfire.

Sloppy work at least.

Ok. Thanks for the information!

Here's a link to how the running compression tests should have been done.
