Moog quality has vanished
I have used Moog products for quite some time and they have been really good. The last 3 years is the exact opposite. Lower control arms are shot already- both sides, Less than 18k on them. Moog coil springs in the rear, Less than 13k on them and one exploded yesterday. I had to replace a tie rod end on one of those LCA less than 1 year after the install. I put about 6500 miles on a year. Moog parts are off my list from now on. Looking for quality replacement parts suggestions. What have you had good luck with? thanks

Moog went China based manufacturing many years ago. Quality started slipping and never got it back. Now they are just another after market company.

AC Delco oil filters have been built all over the world. Just depends on who won the bidding wars. I’ve seen their HHR filters stamped as made in USA , Hungary, India and some other places.
Point being. Most name brand part’s don’t even manufacture their own product. It’s subbed out. |
Having a spring explode while you're in the car is an experience. Started the HHR and backed up about 5 feet and BANG. Thought I backed into something but no jolt. Pulled ahead and got out and didnt see anything but some coiled up powder coated rusted rings on the driveway. OEM springs made it 208,000 miles. Moog? 13,000. miles. Money down the drain. At least its an easy job. Front wheel bearing are another subject. Expensive NAPA bearings dont last any longer than chinesium brands at half the price. NAPA are probably chinese anyway.. I can change a wheel bearing with both eyes tie behind my back,. Last week, 2 wheels bearing and an oil change in under an hour. It helps to put antiseize on them where the aluminum touches the bearing. Torqued to 155 lbs and wheels to 100. I cant understand why a sealed wheel bearing cant last very long. If its a lack of grease, wouldn't it go out in 100 miles or so? Seems to me it would take much more technology to make a bearing Not last, than to just make it right to begin with. The old ones spin nice and smooth in my hand. But at 70 mph, they howl.

NAPA used to carry both Chinese and Mexican bearings, don't know about now. The Chinese are the cheaper of the 2. "Made in America" includes Canada and Mexico, you could stretch that to Central and South..
I found that Chinese hubs can be replaced 3 times for the price of the more expensive options, if you do the labor yourself. Cheaper even if they are junk. |
Without getting too pollical, they should tax everything from china, even if the owners are based in N.America. That may make business owners re-think outsourcing. But manufactures would rather outsource and pay taxes for people on the system. I have no idea what a cargo ship gets for GPM ( not mpg) but it seems like the shipping costs would be ridiculous. But once one company outsources, the rest follow suit to stay competitive. Not a good trend. Moog printing boxes is funny and true! I'll be looking for new coils springs soon. They break is near the bottom so the ride height isnt affected.
