Good idea! That should last longer, and some might now need to revisit the dreaded butyl patch , time may have taken its toll !

Perhaps 3m double sided body side molding tape as a back up!

The plastic won’t allow the weather strip adhesive to grip and hold by itself.
The tape will, a tip wipe the plastic with an alcohol wipe to clean it before you stick that tape to it. |
The tape will not fill the gaps between the plastic and the sheet metal. It has to be a continuous line of flexible sealant out of a tube.

100% Silicone tube in chalking gun.

x2 there sleeper. I'd even roughen up the plastic a little to give the silicone something to bite into.
