I have an 07 LT.
My 'check engine' warning light has come on. Also I get an 'overrun' when I try to start. That is, the starter will continue on without firing. Then if I turn off and try to start again it will fire up ok.

I went to the dealer and he scratched his head and guessed at a fuel pump problem. Could this be the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Dealers diagnostics tell him it's running lean!

Problem is they can't fix it for a week and they tell me the car 'may' refuse to start at any time!!

Any comments?

Well, first off, I'd go to a different dealer. He doesn't sound too confident, and just sounds like he's throwing parts at it. I'm not an expert, but that really wouldn't sound like a fuel pump in my opinion, but I may be wrong... I would guess you might have some type of vacuum leak perhaps?

If you have a check engine light, go to your local parts store (Auto Zone, Advance, etc.) and have a free scan done and get the code...... may be more than one stored, and write them down. Much better than shooting in the dark.

Yeah, if you know what code it is it should be a little more descriptive...but you never know.

The guys are right - you need the code to start determining whaere the problem lay. The dealer should be able to measure the fuel pressure from the pump to determine if it is up to spec or not.

OBD II code scanners are available at reasonable prices. Most of them have a feature whereby you can clear certain (but not all) codes. Valid codes will of course return if there is a problem. Most codes are valid. Finding out what causes the codes to be set in the first place is where expertise comes into play.
Most scanners have a real-time engine monitoring function, so you can keep an eye on things and get a leg up on developing trends.
An OBD II code scanner is worth having just to keep dealers honest!

But the HHR is CAN, so OBDII wouldn't do you any good.

Thanks everyone. The problem is that the 'expert' is away for the week and the service writer is just guessing! I think!

The service writer cleared the 'code' and now the light is off. My main concern is can I keep driving in the meantime? Or will I do damage or find myself calling roadside assistance.

I don't think you'll hurt anything by driving it. The light will come back on if there is a problem...but you should be all set to keep going for now.
