Replacing '06 HHR Key dongle
 

I need to replace the key dongle for my '06 HHR.

Basically, after 10 years of use... the circuit board inside has fallen apart, little transistors and diodes have become detached due to bad soldering; and the battery clip has fallen out as well.

Does anyone know the average price for getting one of these replaced; as well as the best way of getting one replaced.

I just had a local key/lock/locksmith shop that does Key Dongle work, quote me $80 on mine... and I'm thinking surely there is a cheaper option out there!

If I remember correctly the auto parts stores carry replacements for these that come with the needed item to program it to your car. A quick search should yield the info you need.

When you search use "keyfob".

NAPA has one Advance has one etc. They come with a programming module for around $60.

You can get an OEM fob on eBay (about $20), then pay someone that has a good computer or a Tech2 to match the car & fob.

When I had the ignition recall done, one key fob had died and the dealer said they could try to repair it, but no guarantee. I had them just replace it rather pricey over $100 plus reprogramming.

Ebay has oem key fobs for $20.

That's what I have, they are the same as dealer ones.

I think I was able to get 2 for about $20 and then had to find a dealer that would program them for free.

They still work great 2 or 3 years later.

You might want to take a shot at soldering it back together. The battery clip is a known problem on all key fobs, I have soldered many clips back into place. Flux is your friend.

I just repaired two of ours with the insert from keylessfix and if I remember correctly they offer all the parts to repair the fobs. First heard them called dongals by Ed China on Wheeler Dealers, a fun to watch automotive show originating in Britain. They are on cable on the Velocity Channel.

Just today I had my key fob programmed by the dealer ($39.99 + tax) after finding out they or an auto locksmith were my only options. Fortunately I was able to buy a complete 4 button fob online for $10. As told, after taxes, the lowest I could come down to was $60. Still, that is a savings off the dealer only option.
Still don't know why we can program up to 10 keys but can do our own Key Fob's.

They have been proven to work with other fobs, so you could buy one and 3 other fobs and program them all.

Advance Auto etc. Sell key fob's with and without "guts" but not the programmer. I got mine from "Keyless option" via Amazon. Complete with battery, add it needed was programming ($10+ tax). Advance didn't have the 4 button model for the HHR, nor the programmer - at that price I would have bought theirs. (Speed perks discounts). But thanks.
