My FRAM filter has both the big and little "O" ring on the replacement filter. I suspect it should be there.

The small one seals the in/out going oil, without it the oil could bypass the filter. This statement is based solely on my feeble observations, and may be totally incorrect.

I think you are correct, donbrew...... If your filter came without the small o-ring, it's defective, don't use it and take it back...... Check the box of the new one and make sure it's complete.

Yeah the little o-ring is needed, I'd be concerned enough to take the filter back out to confirm that its there, otherwise the oil will bypass the filter.

I always open the oil filter boxes at the store.. Nothing worse that getting home & missing stuff.

PS: Adding a wipe of clean oil over the O-rings prior to install helps prevent any possible chaffing during install..

My STP flter came with both O rings the big one was of course in the box and the tiny one was already on the filter . One on the filter was green and the larger one for the cap was black not that it really matters ! Other than the OEM cap O ring I have is green just useless info I am sure .

As My wife says Iam a NUT anal ass I wasn't sure about the small O ring and went out and pulled the oil filter at 2 am to be sure things were right . I just didn't remeber seeing the small O ring when I changed it a few weeks ago . so I had to look only been drove a couple 100 miles so would not a been a big deal but all was right it was there now I can sleep .
