I asked about the best tires for the snow and ice. Would you believe it snowed once...Had a mild winter this past year. The tires are 215x16 I think:D. I don't know why but since I had them installed, there's a fairly loud "whinning" sound. I guess I'm getting used to it because it doesn't bother me like it used to when I bought them in January 2012 for $500. Are the tires too close to the wheel wells,causing a resonating/whining sound?

On y 07 the tires where very close to the plastic inner fenders in the back with snows.
Doubt that's causing the whining noise
Are you sure its not Maybe a wheel bearing noise.
check tire pressure and check for uneven wearvon tires and rotate tires see if skumd changes

More than likely it's just the resonance of the tire. Most dedicated snow tires have larger blocks and lots of tiny sipes in the tread. This will give a higher noise than your standard all season. The quietest snow tire I've tried is the Michelin pilot sport alpin pa3. These are high performance snow tires though and not spikeable.

Thanks Jack. My 2008 just turned 32K miles. Doubt bearings would cause this. But I'm not a specialist in this sort of thing. No obvious abnormal wearing noted at this time. This only started when the new tires were put on. Tires hold air well. Alignment is good also. I am a bit puzzled on this one...

Which exact tire did you purchase?

If it's a dedicated snow tire (non-studded) it will be louder than an all-season tire.

Yeah that's exactly my thoughts above.....

Good snow tires are usually loud and dont last that long as the compound is soft. Noise is night and day comparison between summers and winters. When the bearings start to go they growl and its very noticeable.
