Tpms issue

My service tire monitor system light goes on and off randomly stating a different tire isn't registering each time. Does anybody have any input on this?

firemangeorge 04-28-2019 06:29 PM

Year and model ?
Original TPMS sensors ?
Are you the original owner ?
Sensor batteries are only good for about 8 years.
Has the car battery ever gone dead or been disconnected or changed ?
Some 2008 models have a program issue after a dead battery. Needs a software update on those.

donbrew 04-28-2019 06:40 PM

Are the positions set?

All the tires are set and fine 90% of the time. occasionally on startup it doesn't recognize the left front. Other times its the right front and so on

The batteries last 8-10 years. Let's do maths, 2019-2008=11.

So more then likely all 4 need replacing

I would say so.
When I bought my used HHR only one sensor would drop out, always on the same tire. not knowing the history of the sensors I installed all 4.

Sam's Club charged $35 each, installed. Yep, including wheel and tire R&R and balance. They couldn't managing re-syncing them, tho, so it was off to the dealer.

Doc brown 05-02-2019 01:20 PM

I just had them replaced on my Sierra. That's how it starts. Intermittent drop out. After a while one will fail. Then if you rotate tires you can't sync them anymore.

Oh my. Not the dealer for this. It's a very easy process. Takes less than 10 minutes.

The 2011 requires the special tool to set positions; tire stores should be able to do it by now. The tool is really cheap now, used to be expensive.

The system was changed sometime in the 2010 model year. So SOME 2010's need the tool. It is the RCDLR programming that changed not the TPMS.
2008 models had a programming glitch that caused the RCDLR to develop a case of dementia if the battery was disconnected for too long; This is fixed with a software update.

I bought one of those tools to relearn positions after a tire rotation, for Sweetie’s new ride, it worked great! $6.90 on eBay

Nice score, My lil sister's hubby had to get a tool like that for her 2014 Buick Regal, w/2.0 turbo. But he got it from Amazon for about $12. Doh !!

donbrew 05-02-2019 08:35 PM

In 2012 they were $85, I dumped mine on eBay for $65 after shipping and fees in 2016.

sleeper 05-02-2019 09:24 PM

Yea, prices always seem to be much higher when something is new to market. You did good Don.

letterman7 05-03-2019 12:50 PM

Just went through this on my ride. Turned out that 2 of the 4 were bad right out of the box. They were only 6 months old. Replaced those today... shop has a lifetime warranty on all their parts.

You have a link to this ?

donbrew 05-03-2019 01:17 PM

Really tough to type "chevy tpms tool" into eBay search. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+tool&_sacat=0

Sarcastic aren't we ?
People who give info should complete their statements, it would help the less learned in finding out.

donbrew 05-03-2019 01:47 PM

That's why I included directions to find the link. If I had just plopped the link somebody would ask how I got it. What statement was left unfinished?

Look, this forum is to help and educate.
Blue made a statement about buying an Ebay item. He should have given a link to to it. That's all.

Oldblue 05-03-2019 04:24 PM

But the item isn’t available any longer the link is closed.

this is the closest I can find.

I normally buy new sensors and valve stems when I get tires replaced, or every other time, on my cars. Plan to replace them regularly. It's a small expense, but everything keeps working.

letterman7 05-07-2019 08:01 PM

Am update since the OP hasn't posted whether they got new sensors or not. My new sensors failed.. or supposedly failed... again this past weekend. Same symptoms as the OP - odd loss of signal at the rear tires, randomly on either side. Sometimes they would "be" there, sometimes not. So, today I went to start the car and the battery was partially dead.. hmm... Jumped the car and went to the garage and had a discussion with the head mechanic who is also a friend, so I trust his word. A dying battery could conceivably be a cause - new battery on it's way. Other items that can cause odd drop outs are any RF interference - Bluetooth enabled aftermarket stereos tend to be a lead culprit. Of which I have one, but my issues didn't start when I installed the stereo 5 months ago. Just putting it out there for general info... when I get my new battery in we'll see if that changes anything, else it'll be all new sensors and another reset to see if we can isolate any further incidents.

sleeper 05-07-2019 08:21 PM

letterman7- Be interesting to learn if a new battery helps the sensors you have now..

Oldblue 05-08-2019 02:28 PM

A weak battery for the car can’t keep up with the electrical wonders 12.4 volts is a dead battery in these trucklets
