Old idea. Keep your eye out at thrift stores. Back in the 50's we had a tank thing that hung out the window; works by compressing and expanding air. My dad kept one in the attic through the 80's, even after car AC became a popular option. I recall driving through Death Valley in the old Studebaker on the way to a new post, it kept us alive.

It might be a bad idea to introduce water vapor into your vehicle's interior. The cloth seats and carpet would absorb, and it could potentially get into the electronics.
Wow. If you're that worried about a small loss of gas mileage by running the AC.....
1. Sell the 16 year old HHR.
2. Get another car that gets better mileage than the HHR.
3. Drive the "new" car , use the AC and be comfortable and happy.

Some guy on the forum back ten years or so ago had one of these mounted on his HHR... Different brand I think, but same concept.
