couple questions
couple questions
hi all
2007 with the chromelooking(but not)17" rims
the 17" rims on the used hhr i bought have a yellowish tinge to them on the front rims.
can this easily be removed?
its almost like yellow varnish and does not seem to want to scratch(with finger nail)
is this clear coat deterioration or can it be removed?
next
my wife's stepdad has a set of upgraded 16" saturn vue alloys(2008 i think)
will these fit my hhr?they have 235/60/16 tires on them with less than 3000 kms.
would these larger tires fit(i know it would throw the
speedo out a bit)mostly worried about clearance in the wheel wells as they are about an inch taller than the 17" that are on now..
thanks,jeff

The answer to the first question is that you are seeing deterioration of the clear coat on the wheels. In the past the former owner let brake dust sit on the wheels for an extended period of time and it stained the clear coat. Not much to be done except for refinishing the rims.
The answer to your second questions is two no's. The bolt pattern of the Saturn Vue is 5 x 115mm while the bolt pattern on the HHR is 5 x 110mm, so the rims won't work. Also the tires are too tall to fit the HHR with a height of 27.1", anything over 26" in height will hit the lower spring perch with the inner sidewall of the tire resulting in tire damage.

dammed it
could have got rid of 2 problems with one step.
i see that some vues had 5 x 110 rims.
how can i tell?
i could always get smaller tires on the height issue, but if the bolt pattern is wrong then thats that.

Here's a link to the database of Saturn bolt patterns, the Vue is listed as the same 5 X 115mm pattern from '02 to the end of production.

When I was looking for wheels a while back I put together this list of wheels that (to my understanding) are all 5x110. I make no warranty to it, and also it's always important to check the offset too.

i see you can get adapters to go from 5x110 bp to 5x115 bp,any opinions on these?
would these not push the rims outward the width(1") of the adapter to the fender lip?
also any idea of the cost of resurfacing the stock rims?
thanks,jeff

Adapters can open up a can of worms when used, they will shove the wheels outward about 20-25mm which will give you too much offset with the Saturn rims. Running too much offset will give you long term problems with the wheel bearings and other suspension components, along with degrading the handling of the vehicle.
I know you've zeroed in on the Saturn rims that you have available from your wife's stepfather, but anything you might save by using them would be a false economy. One other thing to consider is the requirement for frequent wheel and adapter torque checks, you have to check the torque on wheel adapters and rims frequently unless you want to rick losing a wheel.
I'd check with a local body shop to see how much they would charge to refinish your current wheels, or look into aftermarket alloy rims in the proper bolt pattern and offset. HHR's are saddled with an odd bolt pattern, but there are enough options available that I'd consider wheel adapters only as a last resort.
