Do I recall a few panel vehicles from back in the day with a single side swing door, or is that my imagination at work again? Sure would be simpler to deal with the gasketing if someone came up with a hinge kit allowing the current hatch to remain intact.

The side swing wouldn't be too hard to do actually, provided there is enough metal to support a hinge kit. You would most likely need to use a "Lambo door" conversion kit due to the need for the door to come straight out and then tilt to the side.
