best cheap mod for HHR standard shift ... an armrest!
The one thing I couldn't get used to after I bought my SS, 5 speed was the lack of an armrest.
A cheap fix to this is outlined below. The project costs less than $10 and took only a few hours. Yes, you give up the front cupholders, but I can live with that. The armrest just flips back for easy access to the parking brake (or if you were planning on doing some competitive or "spirited" driving).
Materials: packing foam, spray adhesive, black cloth to upholster finished armrest:
First I made a mock-up using some small boxes and duct tape:
Glue together and laminate some blocks and sheets of packing foam using spray adhesive. Use the denser plastic packing foam that is used to pack computer monitors, TVs, etc., not styrofoam.
Trim and shape with electric carving knife:
Bottom view, notch goes over parking brake handle:
Upholster with black foam backed fabric (I had a piece left over from another project, but I believe it is available at fabric stores such as Jo-Ann's).
One note, be aware of how tall the final product is. My box prototype was too high and made shifting uncomfortable. The final product is just right and doesn't interfere in any way.
Now I am ready for many long trips of comfortable driving.
