It only comes out the top if you have an automatic. It's super tight and tough though, which you found out. Manuals have a thicker flywheel, which won't fit out the top.

You will figure it out, the transmission can be dropped out the bottom if the engine, fuse box are out of the way, there are 3 transmission mounts .

Where? And don't I have to disconnect it from the engine? I'm trying to do that but I have to build a transmission stand or cart for it

I don't understand. If you took the engine out of the vehicle, and the transmission is still attached to the engine, then the transmission is out of the vehicle already.

Harbor freight has 4 wheeled furniture dollys. I screwed a 4x4 piece of plywood to it, set the assembly on the plywood, and then separated the engine and transmission.

I read that he pulled the engine out the to (glutton for punishment) and left the trans in. No explanation of "why?".
I suppose, if you have a crane you could disconnect the tranny mounts and pull it. Would have been a lot easier to jack the car up and drop the cradle, that can be done by just removing the 6 strut bolts, upper motor mount and other connections on the top then the 4 cradle bolts. Viola, trans, engine, wheels ready to work on.

Reminds me of the first VW engine I pulled. No book, no experience, 19 years old (dumb a**). "Pull it out from the top" I thinks. Bent the garage door tracks, but got it out, then bought VW for the Complete Idiot.
