NEMS '10 Kancamancus Cruise

This was posted at another forum I frequent but I think this would be a great time for us NE HHR owners to meet each other. Another plus is that it would make for some great photo ops too. If some of the links don't fully work, there's a link to the original thread below.

The 2010 NEMS SPRING KANC CRUISE will be held on May 16th 2010. This year there is a new route which will include all of the same roads of past, but with the addition of doing Bear Notch TWICE. There are a few other minor changes, but be assured it will be as good or better than before.

A detailed map of the route will be posted in the next week or so.

Expect the same great organization as all previous cruises.

This years sponsors include
-BALLISTIC MOTORSPORTS
-NEXT LEVEL MOTORSPORTS
-MAINE AUTO INC.
-JAMES AND SON LLC
-MOTOSTAR PERFORMANCE
-PLUS MORE TO COME

As always all proceeds and donations go to the New Hampshire Make-a-wish foundation. Last year we raised $1000 for them, so that's the goal to beat this time!!

Updates and details will follow.

Get your cars ready, you won't want to miss this one!!

I just read what I could on that forum.
I'm glad there are enough people that respect thier rides enough to skip Hurricane Mt Road.

Don't do it unless you're ready to change your brake pads and repair whatever damage occurs to the rest of your ride.
It's paved but it's hell on cars, hurtling down around curves with drop-offs hiding.
There are hundreds of accumulated scrapes and gouges in the asphalt at the bottom of the drop-offs.
It's awesome if you're in a beater or a bike but my SS hasn't been up/down it and it won't.
Maybe in a 5-speed but the automatic enjoys picking up speed wayyy too much.
It's been bent frame city for too many cars.
http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/nh_hmr.html

The rest of the cruise should be awesome.

I'll make this cruise on May 16.
I don't know if I'll follow the whole route or bug out to hike Red Hill in Moultonborough or fish in Lake Winni or ???
I've been going there for 49 years and know every secondary/backroad/attraction worth visiting from North Winni to Twin Mt.

Frinstance -
Waterville Valley has a series of 30 or so waterfalls running down the hills at the end of the road.
There are paths leading up/down next to the stream/brook/whatever, The Falls.
Many of the falls and pools at them are hidden from the trail.
It's a great place to skinnydip, sunbathe and screw your significant other in the sun.
I know this

Here's a write-up I did from one of my late-night rides in NH last June https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/north-east-27/%7E400-mile-drive-nh-inc-kancamagus-highway-24063/#post390687

The waterfalls in Waterville Valley are at the end of Rt. 49
It's called Cascade Falls.
It's rated as an easy hike and is in the guidebook "Waterfalls Of The White Mountains" by Bruce & Doreen Bolnick

There's also an unmaintained "road" that crosses the Sandwich Mountain Range through the notch from Sandwich to Waterville Valley
It's called Sandwich Notch Road (go figure)
It's 7 miles of dirt road that'll break our intercoolers right the F off.

I had a brand-spanking-new GMC Jimmy as a rental one time.
I brought it there after it had rained for about a week straight.
I drove it from S to N at a safe speed to check for surprises.
I turned around, fastened my seat belt and drove back as fast as I could manage.
I was not nice.
It was fun.
I didn't break it but it got a serious work-out.
I returned it the next day totally covered in mud.

No problem

I'm leaving in a few minutes to go hike Red Hill near Moultonborough.
It has 1340' elevation change and is a moderate to strenous hike.
It used to be a good workout when I was in shape.
I'm not now but I read that the best way to get in shape to hike is to hike (!)
I've only been hiking fairly level to slightly hilly at 3-5 miles.
I'm not expecting to be happy, comfortable or invigorated for the drive back.
It's gonna kick my ass, and thighs and calves and...
Someone posted to peakbagger that he hiked it on Saturday and it had a little snow on it.

how fun

Wow!

3-5 flat miles doesn't equal 1.7 up 1380 feet. Is that 15% grade?

I forgot how much fun having my heart hammer in my chest (scaring the **** out of me) over a mile up a hill is
I also forgot how much fun slamming my feet down thousands of times on the way down is with 30 extra lbs on my torso and worn out sneakers ouch!

I'm thoroughly beat up but it was fun anyway.

I'm slapping a nicotine patch on when I finish this pack.
If you don't hear from me for a while it's because I shot someone in nico-withdrawal.

I wish I knew about this sooner! I'm doing an event with my car on the 15th, there's no way my wife'll let me bug off the entire weekend

I'm already booked for that weekend but it would have been a fun local drive.

Asanti,

I'll call you so we can make plans.

I also wanted to ask if anyone has ever driven up the back of Cathedral Ledge?

It has an awesome view of the surrounding area including the Presidential Range to the North.

Here's a couple of shots from when we did a Kanc Cruise with Club DSM New England.
