Cool 06 HHR Storage Bin Latch Broken

Hello,

While driving in the pouring rain, I hit a pot hole and the storage bin latch broke completely from the lid.

Anyone else have this issue? I couldn't find a recall according to GM on my VIN.

Front or rear storage area?

Im gunna assume the front. Your not gunna get a recall cause that latch broke. Plus yours is an 06 and well out of warranty.

Check this recent thread out for a creative fix: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/show...hlight=storage

Otherwise, you might want to try a salvage yard for the whole door. It's probably pretty cheap as well.

First, there WAS a recall for this specific issue....latch breaking on impact during an accident. I would think impacting a large hole could be the same. GM sent thousands of the repair kits to the owners with instructions to install yourself or make an appointment with a dealer for a no charge install.

You could probably inquire. But frankly, as others have suggested repair it yourself with a salvaged part.

Here read this.....

That's what I did with mine. The recall for the latch was a plastic piece that was supposed to help with the lid opening in case of an accident, not a broken latch. The additonal piece had nothing to do with the latch itself. I'm guessing flex in case of an impact might cause the lid to open and items inside the bin could become projectiles. After looking at mine, it's a poor design and I'd imagine this will happen more and more unless they improved the way the latch bolts to the lid on the 06's. But again, if you use the above method, it's a cheap fix that is much stronger than original.

I think it was only the 06's. The recall part they sent out was nothing more than a type of brace or support that fit into the compartment. Looks like it would only hold the latch a little tighter. What's breaking here isn't the latch, it's the latch mounting points on the lid. When I did the above mentioned modification, one side had already bit the dust (after a temp fix a while back), but the other side was about to completely let go also. The plastic is thin and I'd imagine from heat it's just getting brittle and gradually just comes apart. To fix this back to stock, you would have to replace the compartment lid. This started happening close to the 6 year mark after build on mine, I'll be curious to see if it starts happening to more as age sets in.

But for only a couple of bucks, mine is much stronger than it was. These nylon screws are designed for tags, so they should last a long time. If not, again, it's cheap.....

On a side note, I did have to remove the recalled part as it's give almost no additional space between it and the lid.

Mine dont like to open. You press the button and nothing happens. You have to pry it up with your fingers
