2006 HHR Engine "Runs" After Turning Off
Hello All. Was just in a 5 car pileup in November... I was the last car. I had to replace the hood, bumper, headlights, drivers side fender, radiator, radiator fan, ac condenser, drivers airbag, and drivers and passenger seat belts. This was a 3 month process of living on eBay and getting rock bottom prices on my parts due to only having liability insurance. $1,213 later she's back to her old self.
My car runs fine until you shut it off. If you turn it off and pull out the key the engine sputters 2 or 3 times and then shuts off totally. I can't explain it other than it's like the older cars did when you'd take the key out and they'd still run. If you watch the gauges, you can see them all go down, the engine does its 1-2-3 sputter and then they bury themselves to the bottom. I cannot figure out what on earth it may be. There was no damage to engine, or frame of car in accident.
Second problem.... I can push the button on the shifter and move out of park and into any gear with no key in the ignition. The car does not have to be started, but you do have to press the button. When I got into the accident I was hauled off in an ambulance. The airbag and seat belt did a number on my stomach / face. I was told the cops couldn't get the car to start and did what they had to moving the car off the interstate to the side of the road. When I picked it up from the tow yard the radiator fan had pulled the fuel injector harness connector apart. After removing the damaged radiator parts I was able to simply snap it back together and the car fired right up. I am not sure what they could have done to break the above?
Any ideas? I am out of money and stumped.

Run on or "dieseling" is what it used to be called.
Back a few years ago, a too high of an idle was often the cause of "dieseling". Not sure if it happens with today's modern engine electronics.
And a X2 on sleepers suggestion if it's not an idle problem.

Not sure if you got this fixed or not, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "dieseling" may be a symptom of your timing being off. Typically, too much retard in the timing can cause "dieseling".
That only applies to carburated motors where air moves the fuel..on electronic the fuel is 'shut off' via the fuel pump, and if theres no power to the system then the injectors cannot allow gas to pass...so..maybe possibly a leaky(dirty) injector (fuel rail will hold pressure after pump shutdown)...or for some reason theres residual power coming from somewhere ( not likely, but you were in a wreck)..I'd recheck anything disturbed in the eng compartment..check seating of the relay boxes and relays and the harnesses...then have injectors checked..only way it can stumble is if theres fuel to burn....check the things you can check first before having to fork over the dough.....could also let it set overnight and check fuel rail next day to see if there still pressure there ( no pressure then its leaking down) and ask anybody who you think may know something about this( without the expected " well bring it in and we will check it" answer )
Yeah, I guess you're right. Sorry, been working on my old Isuzu too much lately.
