2007 hhr broken valve lash adjuster

I bought this car used in not running condition .The previous owner told me that he was driving home and the engine started to rattle and when he pulled into his driveway it popped and never started again ...My thoughts were timing chain or rocker broke ... but i bought it pulled the valve cover after a failed compression test to fine two rockers sitting in the gallery one of the valve adjusters had broken and the rocker came off and kicked the one beside of it out also..the timing chain was tight i didnt see that it was broken or loose for that matter but i installed two lash adjusters inspected the others ( not removing the cams as their is no need ) i loosened them just to let the rockers come free and pull out the adjusters... i reassembled everything and it will start although very hard to do so as the accelerator must be held at half way then it still wont idle and the engine vibrates badly if you release the peddle it dies ... so im assuming it has jumped time and the engine is no longer balanced ... am i correct ?

Welcome to the site, that is very possible, are there any codes?
I would expect a P0016 code to indicate the crankand cams are out of time.
These are very close tolerance engines so you should remove the front cover and check the timing marks.

How in the world is that possible?

Oh, I know! A valve hit a piston. Probably after the chain jumped.

Ahhhh... The force of the piston impact transferred up the valve stem, affecting the rocker arm. So new timing set, new or rebuilt head, you should be good to go. Or swap out for a used engine, how many miles on the engine now?

thanks for the warm welcome...sorry it took so long to reply but i just got home from work...only code was a p0300 (random misfire) no timing codes at all but i do have a question i measured the new lash adjusters against the old one and the new ones are a bit longer old one is 1.450 in to the new one being 1.465 could this be holding the valve slightly open causing the misfire ...just a thought ...i measured them with a digi caliper.. im also going to check the plugs again and replace them again if needed and do another compression test

What engine?

Did you get part number 12572638/HL129? Probably need to find out how they got out and measure all of the others.

So what were the results of the compression test? Were the lash adjusters in question also on number 1 cylinder?

yes they were also number one ..imma drop the oil pan and assess the damage worst case new engine ... best case it snapped the rod and the rod bearing cap and bearing is still connected and didnt harm the crank ( not likely ) but usually the rod after it breaks comes through the side of the block and i cant see that damage from the outside of the block at all ...at least not yet...but by looking down the bore through the spark plug hole the piston looks to be at top dead center or at least close to top ...maybe the cap came off and is in the oil pan ? also probably not likely without severe damage to the crank...
