2008 HHR Klunking
2008 HHR Klunking
I have given up on finding the klunk in the front end. I installed new sway bar bushing and no improvement. I can not find the klunck ! There is some play in the rack and pinion though. This is so bad I can not believe it is not easily seen.
The car is going on the market ! I just give up !
It has been up in the air so much it could be an airplane !

Well you only replaced one of the possible sources of a clunk.
There's the rear lower control arm bushings.
Then the sway bar end links.
The ball joints sometimes.
The front bumper cover can rattle pretty good.
The strut top plates
The coil spring isolators top and bottom
Then there's the axle hub bearings.
So you have some more inspections to do, or just give your HHR away because your frustrated and upset
I suggest taking a little more time to investigate the causes of rattles and clunks here

A link thanks Donbrew!
Some clunks are as simple as properly torquing the fasteners!

There are specific techniques needed to properly diagnose problems with the front end. There are many possible causes of noise in the front end, but unless you can properly diagnose the source(s) of the problem you will just throw money at it without necessarily resolving the issue.
It sounds like replacing the sway bar bushings were a guess - and if you have been reading up on the issues others have had here and are diagnosing the problem based on them, it won't quite cut it. One actually has to lay hands on it and determine the problem after a thorough diagnosis. Often a trip to a trusted mechanic is needed, at least for the diagnosis.
