Lower gears 2nd, 4th, & reverse arent responding. How do I check my cable?

Welcome!

Start by looking at it. Driver side below the under hood fuse box.

Is the Check Engine Light on?

What are the code numbers?

There is only one cable.

It is pretty much a "intuitive" remove and replace. If you are mechanically inclined it is doable, otherwise pay someone.

Code numbers? There are two cables. One upper on top that i can reach easily and one under that one that connects to a horse shoe looking thing.

Automatic transmission cable

Chevrolet HHR SHIFT CONTROL/AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Is the transmission end engaged or broken?

2nd, 4th, and reverse-when you try to put it in those gears it wont hold just shifter stick just goes back to neutral position. I can mess with top shifter cable to put it in 2nd and 4th but cant move cable enough to get it into reverse gear.

Pelican. Is your's a automatic trans. or a 5 speed stick shift ? Reason for asking is because the 5 speed has 2 cables, the auto only has 1.
