Thumbs down ABS Light On

My ABS light just came on when I parked at lunch. It is now staying on all the time. Anyone have any ideas or have this issue in the past?

Bad ABS sensors seem to be common. Usually its a front one. The only way to know for sure is to have the codes read by a dealer. These can't be read by AutoZone because these are not OBCII emissions codes. If it is a bad sensor, the wheel hub has to be replaced, not just the sensor because the sensor is part of the hub assembly. I just changed one due to a similar problem, except mine was intermittent. Quite honestly I took a guess as to which hub it was and I was right.

I haven't had anyone plug it in yet. Have to make an appointment at a dealership to have a Diagnostic check.

If it is a bad sensor and needs a hub replacement, how expensive and how difficult to replace?

Well, whatever the problem was it has corrected itself. The light is no longer on and I attempted to lock the wheels up and the ABS kicked in so who knows what the problem was.

Good to hear. If it comes back, and you have an '07 or newer, the hub is covered under the 100k drive train warranty. If not, and you can do your own work, I paid $118, including shipping, for my hub through Rock Auto.

Mine is an 06 with 60K. So no go on the warranty. How difficult was install?

If you can change your own rotors, then this isn't much harder. The hardest thing is the main shaft bolt. It's easiest to take off and on if you have an air gun. Then its just 3 additional bolts. Its all white metal so nothing really sticks so bad that its hard to get off. Once all the bolts are off, you'll have to nail it pretty hard from the back edges with a hammer. There is corrosion on the white metal where the hub slides in, that builds up and needs to be sanded off before putting the new one in. The whole thing took me about an hour, and that's taking my time.

Thanks for the Info Doc.... Hopefully it was just a fluke but it sounds like a repair I can do on my own if needed!

If the light comes on once-it will come on again. Ask the dealer how much they would charge for pulling the codes & and estimate of the work. Let them know you may not be able to get it repaired right away due to low funds. It may be worth it to pay them to diagnose it based on their codes, and if it is something you can repair at least you only changed one part instead of throwing multiple parts & electronics at it. OR if you have them do the work when you get some cash they might credit the diagnosis money back towards the repair. Most reputable shops will do that. Good luck with whatever you choose.
