AC problem

When I was coming home from the Dr. yesterday I started hearing a groaning sound which changed pitch with the throttle.Shut the air off and it immediately stopped. Tried turning it back on but got the same result. When I got home I popped the hood and turned the AC on.Got no cold air but the noise stopped. The clutch was spinning but not cycling the cooling fan was not on.Shut the air off and when I got out again the cooling fan was turning without the AC on.Didnt see the temp. but I am guessing it was pretty hot.
Things I checked.
Fuses and relays.All good
Tightened fuse box bolts.(gorilla tight)
unplugged the cooling fan and tested the incoming voltage with the car running AC on.Zero volts
No codes.
Turned AC off and was about to give up but when I tried turning the air on again it started squealing loudly got out to see the smoke coming from the compressor. It was locked up and the belt was slipping.By the time I got back in; the car shut off.I shut the AC off and the car started and ran fine.
I am assuming my compressor is shot but don't really understand why it would effect the cooling fan and why the compressor clutch was spinning freely one minute and locked up the next.
I am waiting for a set of alligator clips so I can hot wire the fan to make sure it is functioning.
Sorry Don for the wall of words.

Sounds like your compressor is kaput! I don’t even try to reason why. Just age? Have you even added R134A to it?

Waiting for my new set of gauges and will test the level.Sorry forgot to add that. It does have some in it because I got some out of the schrader valve.

Cooling fan is working but shopping for a new compressor. I know there were 2 different clutch types.Mine has the triangle on it.This would mean I have the Delphi CVC compressor. Is that correct?

There should be a plate or tag with numbers on it telling you which one you have but the Delphi does have the triangle clutch
