Don't know how normal it is, but my 2007 AC makes a similar noise, but only when its over 100 degrees outside, like 105 or more. As soon as it cools down, the noise disappears. Its been doing this since it was new, is no worse now than it was six years ago when it was new. Haven't heard it yet this year, as our temps have so far only reached the high 90's, but expect to this summer when it gets over 100 again. Haven't worried about it, sure doesn't affect its ability to cool.

Culd be the bearings in the ac comprossor. Had it happen to me on another car after a while of using it. It pluged my hole system with metal shavings and had to replace he entire. Ac system. Maybe cheeper in the long run to have the ac tested. Maybe use a pipe as a stethoscope to pin ponint the sound

had this deal on my 2006 HHR....but, have to imagine that chevy fixed it by now....

had to do with actual reverberation of refrigerent in the high pressure line...the replacement lines(s) included a section of rubber refrigerent hose that absorbed the reverb....the original lines were solid without a rubber section......a new rubber isolator mounting bracket was part of the fix, as well...i know that this is probably not your situation......just food for thought
