Brake lights only work when ignition on
My 2008 LT brake lights are only working when the ignition is turned on. I have scoured the posts and have not seen a conclusion.

Is this common? I recall the lights working all time?

I'm trying to avoid a trip to the mechanic and appreciate the help.

My 2010's brake lights only work with the ignition on. This is normal because the brake light system works through the BCM I believe.
It could be different on some of the earlier models. Not exactly sure if there was a change to the brake electrical system during the 2006-2011 models.

The brake lights on my 08 only work with the key on. However the 3rd brake lamp will work with or without the key on. Maybe that what you seen before

Nothing to worry about, Scarfoot.

Your HHR is functioning exactly as designed, just one of their endearing "quirks".

Scarfoot- Agree with others, my '08 LT is the same.. Weird, but a fact..


Lucky- my 3rd brake light only works with key on...

your right on my 08 the 3rd brake light only works when the key is on. my 07 the 3rd brake light works without the key on. my mix up sorry guys
