Can of worms.

I got a 2010 HHR at my wifes request. I knew it had been in an accident and a new motor put in, what I didnt know is that they upgraded from a 2.2 to 2.4 from a pontiac G6. The wiring is a nightmare, the firmware was never updated and lets not even get into the fuel economy on it.

I need help guys and gals, skip the jabs at my idiot moment please Ive already said them all to myself. I need the full ecm wiring guides and connectors for the inside of the engine. If you know a way to get my firmware updated to the 2.4l engine for under 100 dollars let me know. The fuel rail wiring is even janky looking. I have to figure this out.

A one day subscription to Techweb is about $50. That and somebody that has a Tech2 or equivalent and knows how to use it.

There are folks on ebay that sell used ECMs programmed to VIN; maybe you could contact one and see if they know how.

I don't know if getting a used one from a junked 2.4L HHR would work. It would have the wrong VIN which would make a touch illegal.

Is that the MAF sensor down to the right of the oil dip stick? That will effect fuel mileage if not installed correctly in the air box intake tube.
Did the ECM come with the upgrade 2.4?

That things a nightmare. Probably won't get it right without a lot of time, labor and money.
Sell it.

Personally I think your best route is to put a 2.2L in it. I know this is not what you are wanting to hear, but I think you already understand what you are up against. If an engine swap is out of your skills then like Fireman's says "sell it"
.

Does it run now? Just not good? Any codes? Does the wiring harness fit?

I think that the crankshaft sensor is on the back side on a 2.4 and the front on a 2.2.

Well, then the harnesses should be the same?

The connectors on the harness are pretty much "idiot proof". They layout pretty close to where they belong and most of the connectors are different from each other.

I believe the harness are the same with the exception of the VVT solenoids, I’ve toyed with the thoughts of using 2006 through 2008 non VVT 2.2 camshafts and solid cam sprockets in place of the 2.4 VVT cams and phasers. My engine guy says it’s plausible, but he hasn’t done this before and advised no real gain in performance with the 2.4 long block as opposed to the 2.2.
now, I see the cam solenoids are connected here , but I can’t verify the ECM was changed out from the 2.2 to the 2.4 , with the 2:4 wiring harness. I see wires running outside of the shielding casing but there doesn’t seem to be any damage to them.
I can see the MAF is out and off to the side , perhaps it’s damaged resulting in it running rough.
Them there’s the crankshaft position sensor relearn and possibly a ground wire or two missed and or damaged.
