I have a 2006 Chevy HHR every time I put it in drive and take off it takes off in second gear and doesn't shift to any other gear after I drive it. Can anyone help me to pin point the problem as to why this is happening?

Just need to clarify

It starts out in second gear just one time when put into gear then after you stop and accelerate first gear works?

 

Actually I just drove it earlier and it stays in second gear the whole time. My dad thought it shift good but it's not shifting at all. It stays in second gear the whole time.

Well, we need a bit more info, like how many miles are on your HHR and do you know if(or when), the transmission was serviced. Plus the trim level and engine size please.

You really need to take it to a reputable transmission shop/independent technician, or your local dealer if they are a "good one", and have them pull the OBD II trouble codes.

Most auto parts stores will pull the codes for free, but in a great many cases, their code scanners will not pull trouble codes for the transmission.

Being "hung" in a lower gear is usually bad news, it indicates something like a stuck shift solenoid in the transmission, and by the time you have the transmission torn down to replace a part like that...well you're into same money as buying a good used/remanufactured transmission.

But back to step one, have the codes pulled and get back to us, maybe (fingers crossed), it will be something simple. Like a loose connection, to the TCM(Transmission Control Module).
