CEL light and P0014 Code

I love this forum! It seems I really only come here when I have an issue, lol! I have a 2010 HHR with close to 97,000 miles. Original Power Train warranty expired 1/12/2015. Go figure
Yesterday the CEL came on when I left work to come home. Stopped at AutoZone to have the code read. P0014 was the culprit. My "change oil soon" light came on last week and I have an appointment for Saturday to get this done.
My question is "Should I get the oil change first before venturing to change the solenoids?" or just go ahead and purchase them and change them out?

After searching through the threads I ran across something else that may or may not be the cause.
On my way to work an idiot stopped way short of the light on an exit ramp. I stomped the brake to get stopped and the car started chugging like mad. I put it in park then back to drive as the light changed. I finished my commute which was about a mile further. Parked, turned car off. Started and chugged briefly. Turned off again. Restarted fine. Went out 3 times during the day and started fine. No chugging. Started car at the end of day, running fine. Drove maybe 1/2 mile and the CEL came on. Ran fine all the way to AutoZone and home. Just wondering if this is a related issue?

Get the oil changed first.
Have you checked the oil level? That could be the source of all of the problems.

I concur oil level or dirty oil can cause this issue. However if the codes come back after you get the oil changed, change the solenoids then change your oil again aqs particles may drop in there and cause more issues!

While the VVT mechanism in our engines is dependent on clean oil, that code can also be set by other problems.

First thing I would do is change the oil and filter then clear codes and road test.

If the light comes on, again, get the DTCs but make sure 0014 is not the only code set. Sometimes you'll set two codes. One for an electrical issue in the solenoid circuits and another for the actual cam position not being the same as what's commanded.

I had 0011 and 0014 set in our HHR. I checked and cleaned the connections at the two solenoids and at the ECM and the two fault codes went away...so far.
