Check Engine Light

I've been having my check engine light come on for a while, then go off, then back on. I've replaced the gas cap three times. I've put an additive in the gas, and run a couple of tanks of super gas through. My mechanic says there's nothing wrong and he has reset it, but it eventually comes back on. I'm looking for other suggestions to keep the check engine light off. Thanks.

Seriously? And you expect us to guess what the code is and what the solution might be?

I'm sorry, but this gets way frustrating - we aren't here to play 20 questions - we want to help (we really and truly do) but man, when you only give part of the info there isn't much we can do.

So post the code(s) that is generating the CEL and we will see what we can help you with.

Answer: Find a mechanic that can tell you what is making the light come on then fix it.

If you are telling us exactly what your mechanic said you need to find an actual "mechanic", this guy is NOT.

No Check Engine code. No engine size posted.= I haven't a clue.

Well then now, the DIC would tell you loose gas cap! That was easy!
If the CEL lights up again then roll over to your local parts palace and have them pull the codes, then write them down and post them here for us to decipher!
Also the year , engine and transmission info will help !

Your info shows you have a 2006, 5 speed manual

Sorry I frustrated some of you with my question. I have a 2006 HHR LT with 5 speed manual trans. I don't know the code or how to get it for you. The code has been read by my mechanic and apparently the cause can't be determined. I'm looking for someone else who may have had the same problem that could suggest a cause. I'm just a lady who gets behind the wheel and drives, not someone who has any mechanical knowledge so please don't get all techie on me. If you can help with any suggestions, please feel free to comment. Thanks!

Yes, seriously. You're a Senior Moderator? I don't know what a CEL is, sorry. Thanks anyway.

A C for check E for engine L for light, commonly called a CEL .
Any parts store like AutoZone or Advance Auto or O’Reilly’s will connect a code reader to your car for free and tell you the codes, as I stated earlier, write them down as sometimes the clerks explanation can be wrong.
Could be like P0010 or P0128, that’s all we need and we’ll help you out.

Hi Treasures, 20 questions is, in fact, putting it quite mildly. There are easily a hundred reasons why the CEL(CheckEngineLight) would illuminate. Like oldblue said, when the light comes back, head on down to your local parts house, and they should be able to read the codes for you, free of charge.

Then come back here and post up just the codes, not any description they may give you, as they can be misleading. It will be something like P0010 or P0014. We'll help you figure what the problem is.

Just so you'll know, a CEL(Check Engine Light), can be triggered by one of many, many codes that the cars computer uses.
The link below will give you an idea of how many possibilities there are. Like stated above. Get your codes read. Post the code number here. (number only) We'll try to help you out.
