Check Engine Light and remote start doesn't work

Hello everyone,

I changed my wifes oil in her 06 HHR on Saturday, now on Sunday, her check engine light is on and her remote start won't work. When we hit the remote start, it seems it tries to start but doesn't. Anyone ever have this problem? I did reset the oil life to 100%. I'm stumped..... Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The remote start won't work when the check engine light is on. It is designed that way. It is unlikely that the oil change has anything to do with the current problem. Either take it to a shop/dealer and have them scan the code, or take it to an auto parts store since many of them will read the code for free. Once you fix the cause of the check engine light, the remote start will work again. And just for the heck of it if you recently got gas, make sure the cap is on tightly. If it's not, that will set an evap system code of some sort.

Okay, that explains the remote start issue. I just checked the gas cap and it's tight. If the light doesn't go out in a day or so I will take it to the local auto parts store and see if they can scan the codes... I just don't know what could have went wrong. I changed the oil, the proper way and made sure everything was done correct. I drove the car Saturday after the oil change and no check engine light.... ??????

Again, it probably had nothing to do with the oil change. It was most likely a coincidence and something unrelated failed.

I just can't come to grasps with the fact, we only have 22,000 miles on this HHR... Just doesn't make sense. I'm taking it today to have the codes run. We'll see....

Once you find the code, check through the TSB thread here to see if it might be something simple. With only 22K on the HHR, is it under warranty still? If so, just take it in. If not, you might want to try to talk to the service manager at your dealership to see if there might be any goodwill assistance due to the warranty just expiring.

This happened to me a few months back, I had to take it to my dealer and they reset the pcm. It took about 10 minutes and they did it for free. They also reprogrammed my remotes

Here is that thread https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/general-hhr-4/check-engine-light-remote-start-not-working-19357/

Well, it threw a code of P0449, an EVAP error. I had it reset and it came right back. They reset it again.... I drove it 20 miles without the check engine light on, I turned the car off and back on.... voila... check engine light is back on... I called the dealer and it is still under warranty, so I have to go there. Wished to heck I could do this on my own....
