Checking battery voltage
guys, I support everyone, that's right...
just a remark about the ventilation tube: the role of this tube is overly exaggerated to be diplomatic, and I will not express myself undiplomatically in such a cultured society.
My experience with 3 batteries on this particular HHR shows that this tube does not affect anything. My tube was lost about 8 years ago, and before that it just got in the way in the trunk and was not connected. No problems, no smells, not a single molecule of leakage into the cabin in any weather and under any operating conditions.
I do not know the US legislation and I will say it carefully: Here in Russia, if it occurred to me to choose between 2 options "the presence of a vent hole for the tube" and "good (cheap, capacious, etc.) battery", I would choose the second and would spit on the first.

The fire hazard is hydrogen, but it’s such a tiny molecule that it typically dissipates so quickly it can’t reach a combustible concentration. But no one responsible for any business or website is going to endorse anything remotely hazardous and contrary to established safety standards, because they don’t want to be sued.
There is a plausibly hazardous scenario. If a charger were applied to a somewhat dead battery and the cabin were then closed, I don’t know what kind of concentrations could be achieved.
One of my HHRs came with an incorrect, undersized, non-vented battery. When it needs to be replaced, it will get the correct one because it won’t cost any more. All the decent batteries are available here in group 90/T5 come with the vent with no difference in cost.
Better if people are informed when they make their decisions.

All great points, however, in the event of a catastrophe and the insurance discovered that the incorrect battery was in place, you the owner would be liable , and the insurance company would deny the claim and leave you to face any lawsuits
We decry a “litigious” society, but the fear of liability, often irrational to the point of paranoia, makes people behave better. Or irrationally.
It’s a strange system.
