Coolant temp question
Coolant temp question
Has anyone had this problem.....digital temp shows rising temp when stopped in drive....like in a drive thru. The digital temp rises from 190* to 217* ...then the fan kicks on and it drops back to 189*. As you are driving it fluctuates from 190* to 200*.
The water pump was changed 11 months ago and I just changed out the Thermostat.
Still doing the same thing. Could it be temp sensor?

Geezer,
I had the same type of issue. It would happen intermittently. Ended up I had a little bit of air in the system and when it would get stuck in the right place the temp would go up and down. Purged all the air and the problem went away.

I moved these post to a new thread, since they don't have anything to do with "weird electrical problems".
First, give the SEARCH box a try.
The analog gauge does not give a very good indication of the temp.
Sounds like your t-stat is either broken or the wrong rating.
Thanks db/sb

Thanks Don... replaced the t stat with a 180 exactly the same as original. It is not the t stat. I changed the stat because of the fluctuations. I am really starting to think the water pump the dealer installed is going bad. If anyone has another suggestion I would appreciate it.
To me, and I'm in Arizona also, that is normal operation.
If you are sure the coolant level is correct and the T-stat is working correctly, I doubt if you have a problem, especially if you are experiencing rising temps to about the 217 and when you turn on the ac and the fans initiate , the temp reduces. As the engineers say, "Functions as designed". However, the fans should initiate on there own at around 220.
Remember, you have no air moving through the radiator when you are idling in a drive thru....the fans are not running (if the ac is not on). If you were driving down the freeway at about 60 mph or so, and you experienced the 217-220 temps, then you MAY have a problem. As our temps rise, you will see this more often and you probably will not even notice it in the summer....thus the fans are working and pulling air through the radiator... because you are using the ac.
For what it is worth, I experience the same thing......and that has been since I purchased the car in 2006. And did exactly the same as you today and had exactly the same experience.

The only thing I will mention additionally, and this is my opinion based on varying uses, the water pump or radiator is a little deficient at higher freeway speeds. I noticed slightly increased temps (5-10 degrees)in Arizona at 70 MPH and above. Runs at 205 or so when the ambient is 110 or above (with ac on).
I just checked mine in Michigan... now granted its -9 here this morning, but I never see it go over 200 at stop. I just remote started it twice and then went out and revved it for awhile until the temp stopped climbing. 190 is where it likes to be, but it would go up to 195 and back down to 180 and climb again.
Again, completely anecdotal, but I would go with air in the line or needs new coolant perhaps?
