Question Cranks fine but won't start on first try!

Hi all,

I have a 2007 HHR 2.4 (Automatic Trans) 130,000 miles

Crank speed is normal but will not start on first try, will start and runs perfectly on second or third try. There are no drivability issues or engine roughness when driving,

Here is what I have checked and or tried:

1. Scanned for codes with a bi-directional scan tool (Innova 5160 not the greatest I know) no codes are present and there are no lights (SES) on IC.

2. Checked for pressure at injector fuel rail Schrader valve after just a few minutes of engine being keyed off, no pressure or fuel comes out! (when fuel pressure gauge /tester is available at local parts store I plan to borrow and check for pressure when running.)

3. Looked for and "smelled" for fuel leaks around engine compartment and under back near fuel tank, nothing observed anywhere, no signs of a leak I can detect.

4. Swapped fuel pump relay with identical part, known to be good (No effect)

Anyone have a similar issue with a diagnosis?

Thanks!

Seems to be the fuel pump assembly not holding pressure.

The fuel pressure should not lose more than 5 psi in 1 minute after key off.
The pump only runs for a few seconds if the engine does not start.
Don't hold the key when starting, just turn it to start and let go.

SISU has been like that since I brought her home, although, sometimes she starts on the first try.
I've owned her for 8 years with this issue.
I have learned to live with it as changing the fuel pump is a PITA.

"Seems to be the fuel pump assembly not holding pressure."

Thanks, that's what it seems like with the quick loss of pressure.

Thanks, yes it does this whether I use remote start, bump the key, or hold in start position.

Here's an experiment to try on a cold start. Turn the Ignition on, but not to start. Listen for the fuel pump. It should only go for just a couple seconds. Turn it off. Repeat.Maybe even a third time. Then turn the key all the way to start. Betcha with the system thus primed, it will start the 1st time. If so, it's the chech valve, as previously mentioned.

This bears repeating; it's not necessary to hold the key in the start position until it starts. That's for old-fashioned cars. Just turn it momeitarily . That initiates the start sequence.
