DIY ignition cylinder lock replacement?

Anybody ever tried to replace their own ignition cylinder tumblers? I would like to do it and keep my original key. I've read the how to from one of the e-bay sellers. Sounds easy if you can work with tiny springs and stuff. My key is starting to give me some grief. Would like to fix it before it's a major problem....lol. Just wondering if it's worth the $400+ from the stealer to let them do it.

My key and ignition on my '08 were acting up. Had to click it 2-3 times to start it.

Took it to a GM dealership and he put in a new ignition at no charge to me.
Seems like there is a silent recall. If yours is bad they fix it but a recall is not published. I kept the original key too.

Boydie- That "Special Provision" is for 2008 & newer.

Wouldn't cover the OP's 2006....

sbrice54-

Have you tried lubing the tumblers with your fav spray & straw ?

It is my understanding that the problem is not with the key cylinder but with the switch itself. When the Dealer does it, he replaces the switch and put the old cylinder back in it.

Any locksmith should be able to do the job, unless there are other problems. Like the interlocks are stuck in the open position, that would be odd, but.....
