Stuck oil filter cap

Stuck oil filter cap
Well, as usual I decided to work on my car and something went wrong. I was doing a routine oil change and the oil filter cap is stuck. The cap has rounded off to where the socket isn't getting the grip it needs. I really don't feel like spending hundreds of dollars at a shop for a $15 part. So, does anyone have any DIY tips? I was thinking of piercing the cap and then using a screwdriver and hammer to see if I can get it loose. Another option I saw was to heat a 31mm socket and basically melt it onto the cap. Any help would be greatly appreciative!

And it is cheap for the combo! you will get a basically free filter for the next oil change and you will get the OEM green oil filter cap O-Ring that (debated by some) doesn't need to be changed with every oil change. I have gone through many oil changes since buying that cap and not a hint of a leak without changing the o ring.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking of doing. I'm probably 75% sure the shop I took it to last cross threaded the cap back on. I took an impact wrench to this sucker and it still won't budge. I just called a tow and I'm going to take it a shop

Who rounded the cover off?
If it was cross threaded it should be leaking.
I would be thinking drilling a hole across the "nut" part big enough to put a screwdriver through then twisting.
It is plastic, so breaking it is an option.
