Electrical Gremlin, 2006 model, 135K miles

I'm sure it's s single gremlin, because all of the following symptoms occurred simultaneously:

1) Power locks cycled unlocked/locked/unlocked/locked (3 or 4 times, then stopped)
2) DIC displayed "POWER STEERING" and steering power was reduced, but not completely out
3) Speedometer fell to zero
4) Outdoor temperature gauge reads "---"
5) Will not shift out of 1st gear (possibly because the speedometer isn't reporting)

It's a cloudy morning and the headlights were on, and they did not go out. The engine temp gauge and fuel gauge did not go out, and the dash lights did not go out. All DIC functions were working except outdoor temperature. A/C continued working. I was able to hit the switch and unlock/lock the doors, and when I got out, I was able to use the remote to lock the doors.

I tried several times to turn the car off and back on, but the problem did not go away.

My initial thought is that a computer has died, or that a plug is loose somewhere. Searching this forum didn't turn up anyone with these symptoms. (I did see a post with sort-of opposite symptoms... other stuff like fuel gauge and water temp gauge quit, but not the stuff that quit on me.)

I've had the power lock cycle thing happen several times in the 4 years I've owned the car, and occasionally when I get in and shut the door, the clock on the radio will blink on and back off before I put the key in.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw it out and see if anyone has an idea.

Thanks.

check your underhood fuse panel to ensure the two halves are connected tightly, tighten the nut under the red power post, remove the negative battery terminal in the spare tire trunk for 30 minutes, reconnect and ensure it is tight, this could be the end of the life of your battery, as for #2 go to your GM dealer and advise them you have had the light come on, they will check your VIN, and address the power steering motor.

X2. Oldblue You covered them all here is a pic of the battery connection to check and clean. Mine was slightly loose and it created all kinds of strange things to happen.

RE: power locks cycling - (this is not likely necessarily related, but something to check) I've had the same situation happen a couple of times lately after having replaced the housing and keypad in a key fob. The keypad is a bit sensitive to light presses, and caused the locks to cycle repeatedly when it was jostled in my pocket.

Thanks for the advice. I was actually thinking I should have the battery tested on my lunch break. I've replaced the battery once, but it was probably 3 years ago.

Anyway, I'l check those connections. I put a new power steering motor in myself a month or so ago.

Thanks again.

then it will most likely be the battery or the fuse panel connections. save your receipt for the PS motor GM may reimburse you for it, see your dealer

Also check the connector to the ECM, and the entire engine harness for chafing, etc.
