engine noise
Hi got a 2007 her 2.2 auto at startup I get a ticking type noise until it driven for about 2 miles..Grant it I got 220,000 miles on her but starts on a dime...it sounds under the valve cover but going to use a steoscope to confirm.. timing chain was done at 170,000 and water pump and the new style tensioner.. I was reading that the gm engines sounds like this when the lifters are sticking ? When I rev it up still the same sound it does not change with rpm... so I was going to run some mmo to next oil change to clean and lube at the same time.. so any input on this thanks

Sounds like 50,000 mile timing chain.

I'm with Don, it's time, no pun intended, for a timing chain kit.
While the chains themselves don't "stretch" as some folks claim, the pins that hold the links together do wear out over time, leading to extra slop in the chain. If it's noisy, then it needs attention A.S.A.P., having it fail will cause catastrophic engine damage. Think bent valves, damaged pistons, a cracked head, etc. It can get mighty ugly. |

First thing would be to use a stethoscope as you mentioned above. Locate exactly where the noise is coming from, then proceed.

I'm thinking timing chain and balance shaft/ water pump chains and guides.

From post #6:
Are there even any engine components which don't change sound with engine RPM??? |
Ticking can be fuel injectors, yes and or lifters, yes can tick but will change with rpm! I'd order up one of these
00 11 GM 2 0L 2 2L 2 4L Ecotec Engine Timing Chain Kit w Balance Shaft Set L61 | eBay It could be a tensioner headed south or a guide on the edge of breaking apart |
