Extended Crank and Engine Code p0171

I have a 2007 chevy hhr that I purchased five months ago. Ever since I bought it, my hhr hardly ever starts up on the first try. It always has an extended crank and then I turn the key back to off and back to start again where there is a slight extension of crank and then starts right up. It runs great and sounds great. About every 1 and a half - 2 months, my check engine light comes on with p0171 and then goes off about 2-3 days later. I've searched all over the Internet and it sounds like it needs a new fuel pump. Any ideas? The car had 90,000 miles on it. Thanks!

Yep your on the right track. The fuel regular failed on my 07 it would have a long crank time and set the same lean code. The regulator is sold as part of the fuel pump. You can check this with a fuel psi gauge with the gauge on and the engine running note the fuel psi then shut off the engine if the fuel psi drops off quickly you will more than likely need to replace the fuel pump assembly. If the fuel system wont hold rail psi you will get a long crank time The running psi may also be low at idle.

Its not the pump. It the evap purge solenoid. $22 part. Attaches to the intake manifold. This will cause a long long crank. Try replacing this first as a fuel pump is $800+ and that's if you drop the tank and do it yourself.

Thank you so much! I replaced the fuel pump and she starts up perfectly and runs like a gem! Couldn't be happier!
